One has to wonder sometimes: Tomorrow's election in western New York is largely a referendum on Governor Spitwad's insane desire to give legal drivers licenses to illegal immigrants. Area Republicans are correctly highlighting the link to terrorism, while Democrats cry foul. It would be interesting to see if Republicans, the opposition party during World War II, insisted that prosecuting the war was not a viable political issue. But let's consider this: a valid driver's license is all that is necessary to board a domestic flight. If there are terrorists in New York, and you've got to assume there are somewhere, Spitty's plan has now made them mobile. This is why the next important piece of legislation whether on the state or national level should be requiring a passport for domestic flights. There is a much more thorough background check in process...all you need to get a drivers license is pass a driving test. Several of the 9/11 hijackers were here on expired visas yet they got on board those planes with their other forms of ID. Had they been required to produce a passport, the computer would have shown them to be illegally in the country and they would have been detained. 3,000 lives could have been spared. Spitwad's carelessness is going to get more people killed. And that is a valid political issue.

Comments:
I remember flying to the US before 9/11...when we took a flight from detroit to miami there was no check whatsoever..incredible...then at the denver airport we saw a sign warning you that you should unload your gun before entering the plane!!
Nowadays flying to the states is quite a hassle with all those nasty douaniers.

That's a good point. I think we got too used to not having to live like the rest of the world, never having had a terrorist attack in our own country. Nowadays I would say that the only real annoying thing is that we're hassled on planes without being any safer. Between countries in Europe passports are required if I remember correctly (correct me if I am wrong) and now they will be required between the US and Canada and many of my fellow Americans are enraged. You should see the look on their faces when I tell them I think that passports should be required for domestic flights. I'm sure it would only be a matter of time before terrorists find a way around that too (like all lawless individuals, they have their ways), but for the moment it seems the only sensible thing to do.

that's the problem, people get hassled, but do we get any safer? If planes become impossible for a terrorist to attack then he will try a train, bus whatever..in the end you can't really prevent it without giving up the freedoms, that the terrorist loathes.

But having a passport on you, and being able to identify yourself is something normal nowadays i guess.
